Editor’s Note: SMA’s Junior ROTC program added a new component to its curriculum this year by launching a Junior Valor ministry. A program sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ or “Cru,” Junior Valor is designed to win cadets to Christ, build them in their faith and send them to reach others. Junior David Hethcock was appointed chaplain of the Bear Battalion and has provided leadership for Junior Valor. Hethcock shared the following observations about the program.
Junior Valor Program at SMA
It’s been a honor to be a part of the JROTC Valor program. SMA’s JROTC has begun its participation in this wonderful character-building program based on God’s word. The Valor movement was initially designed for the college level or ROTC. It is very exciting that San Marcos Academy is the first JROTC in our nation to adopt this program at the high school level.
Junior Valor Bible Study at SMA
We are currently meeting every Tuesday in the JROTC room at 0800. All of the volunteers that are participating are provided with the study materials. I spend time reviewing the material and leading the group through this study.
The important part to me is that all the virtues being addressed in this study are found in the Bible. It’s not just an ethical or honor-guided study, but the guidelines are supported by scripture. The way we should act, lead, and represent ourselves is God’s idea. God is sovereign and in control, not us. He is the author of the virtues that we should apply to our lives. He is not supporting an idea that we came up with.
